Weather & Satellite

Extreme storms and more frequent droughts, fires, and floods challenge societies to use our collective intelligence and take actions needed to predict these changes, address economic and environmental security, and better understand and sustain our living biosphere.

IBSS engages with Federal and local government, academia, private industry, non-profits, and the global scientific community to build capacity, improve access to reliable real-time information, and respond effectively to weather events. We help save lives, protect property, and address short- and long-term challenges head on.

  • We lead the development of Atlas 15, a next-generation precipitation frequency framework that provides critical historical data to inform planning our nation’s infrastructure. We deployed the Pilot in 2024 and are on track to expand CONUS/OCONUS by 2027.

  • With 170 million pieces of “space junk” in Earth’s orbit, space traffic control is a key concern for future enterprise. At the Office of Space Commerce, IBSS provides technical and professional services to aid in a larger effort to build a Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS). This is the first public resource of its kind geared toward commercial space travel.

  • We support the National Weather Service Office of Observations’ Surface Observations Systems and Upper Air Observing portfolio. We deliver programmatic and hands-on support to deploy, troubleshoot, and maintain the Office of Observation’s observing equipment/hardware.

Meteorology, Physical Oceanography, Weather Modeling, & Operations

IBSS is committed to building weather-ready, resilient communities through government, industry, academic, and community partnerships. Our experts contribute to weather initiatives for data-rich water information services, life-saving forecasting, and long-term environmental intelligence that safeguards social and economic interests. Our ongoing broad and specialized interests in the physical sciences include the following:

  • Meteorology
  • Remote Sensing
  • Hydrology
  • Physical Oceanography
  • Weather Modeling

Environmental Intelligence & Water Resources Management

IBSS helps our clients design and implement environmental intelligence that address ecological-, social-, and community-driven needs. We offer state-of-the-art water resource modeling, integrating the latest IT, science, observing equipment, and analytics to drive agility and adaptability in weather forecasting. Our efforts aid in the development and sustainment of lifesaving systems, including:

  • Hurricane Forecasting Improvement
  • Operational Hurricane Support
  • Operational Oceanography
  • Fire Weather and Societal Impacts
  • Coastal Resiliency
  • Extreme Precipitation Analysis to Support Civil Engineering Standards
  • Weather-Ready Nation

Weather-Focused Sustainability Advisory Services

Weather-related events are and will continue to produce consequences that exceed the capacity of the affected societies or global systems to manage – with national implications. IBSS is focused on developing end-to-end research and policy solutions to increase understanding of complex and contingent connections between weather and sustainability, and to inform choices about reducing vulnerability to weather events. Our expert staff provides critical services to include:

  • Remote Sensing Data Integration
  • Satellite Situational Awareness, Data Analysis, and International Policy
  • Emergency Preparedness, Continuity Planning, and Sustainable Operations
  • Training, Facilitation, Outreach, and Communications

Weather & Sustainable Communities

IBSS recognizes that weather awareness is critical to the U.S. Federal planning agenda. Cities and communities are at the forefront of developing localized approaches to weather vulnerabilities and uncertainties. We work with clients to prioritize risk based on impacts, evaluate tradeoffs, and develop adaptive strategies to mitigate the potentially destructive consequences of weather events to people, economies, and ecosystems. Sustainability and stewardship are the foundational principles of IBSS and they represent part of our core capabilities listed below.

  • Natural Resource Assessments
  • Risk and Impact Analysis
  • Ecosystem-based Management
  • Sustainable Urban Architecture
  • Communications, Outreach, and Education
