Repairs Mean Rehoming at NOAA Woods Hole Aquarium

May 7, 2025

If you’ve ever strolled the shores of Cape Cod and made your way to the quaint village of Woods Hole, chances are you’ve wandered into the country’s oldest public aquarium, the Woods Hole Science Aquarium. For over 140 years, this beloved spot has educated visitors of all ages about the vibrant marine life off New England’s coast.

Now, for the first time in decades, the aquarium is preparing for a well-deserved renovation. Don’t worry, it’s not closing forever! Aquarium managers have announced that while necessary infrastructure repairs are on the horizon, the doors will remain open all summer long.

But there’s one resident who’s heading out a little early: Bubba, the harbor seal.

For the past three years, IBSS employee Sarah Shea and former IBSS colleague Katie Dever, now a federal biologist with NOAA, have lovingly cared for and trained Bubba. Bubba isn’t just any harbor seal; he’s a charismatic ambassador for marine life who has captured the hearts of thousands of visitors. As the aquarium gets ready for construction, Bubba and several of his tankmates will be temporarily relocated to other accredited facilities around the country.

Bubba’s departure is bittersweet, but it’s also a testament to the dedication and compassion of the Woods Hole Aquarium staff. Our IBSS team, Sarah Shea, Alison Brodet, Michele Sims, and Julia Studley, play a vital role in the aquarium’s daily operations, from animal care to public education.

We invite you to visit the aquarium this summer, meet the amazing team, and say a heartfelt “Bon Voyage” to Bubba. And while you’re at it, check out the video below to learn more about the move, the preparations involved, and the exceptional care that’s going into this next chapter.
